Treatment with platelet-rich plasma
Use of platelet-rich plasma in the treatment of arthrosis, tendonitis, soft tissue injuries, non-healing trophic ulcers, acne and much more.
How does platelet-rich plasma help?
The body's first response to soft tissue injury is to deliver platelets rich in growth factors to the damaged area. Platelets begin the process of restoring damaged tissue and assist stem cells. The use of platelet-rich plasma is the introduction of a significant concentration of platelets. This allows the body to increase the speed and effectiveness of recovery reactions.
The white cell in the center is a platelet - an activated platelet. In the non-activated state, platelets are smaller and smoother. Make an appointment
Platelet-rich plasma is more effective than corticosteroids.
Practice shows that treatment with platelet-rich plasma is more effective than corticosteroids in both short-term and long-term treatment of chronic diseases. Bioactive proteins of platelet-rich plasma stimulate recovery and lead to restoration of degenerative tissue changes. And injections of corticosteroids relieve inflammation and pain without leading to tissue restoration; have side effects, therefore, their repeated use has limitations.
What do we treat with platelet-rich plasma?
PRP therapy is used to treat:
- Arthrosis and osteoarthrosis even of the 3rd and 4th degree (knee, hip, shoulder, ankle, elbow, wrist and small joints of the cysts and feet). It is possible to treat 3-4 joints at the same time;
- Sports and household injuries of joints, tendons, ligaments, muscles;
- Plantar fasciitis (including chronic);
- Rupture of the rotator cuff muscle of the shoulder joint;
- Trophic ulcers of various etiologies;

Acne Treatment: photos before and 5 days after treatment with platelet-rich plasma are shown
A noticeable and rapid improvement without the use of any medications. After all, we know that most medications used to treat Acne give a slow effect, dry skin and their use is limited in time. According to the patient, “it’s nice that after the treatment the skin is not dry, not tight, but natural.”
Am I a candidate for platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy?
Platelet-rich plasma is not a universal treatment for all diseases. Whether plasma will help you in the treatment of your disease - the attending physician, who has experience in treatment with plasma rich in platelets, will decide after a thorough consultation with the necessary studies (such as ultrasound, X-ray, CT scan or MRI). A doctor who has no experience in treatment with plasma rich in platelets, as well as a doctor who does not know anything about this method, will always answer negatively, at best will say that he does not know.
What are the recommendations before the procedure?
2 weeks before the start of the course of treatment, you must stop taking anti-inflammatory non-steroidal drugs, such as Nurofen, Voltaren.
How long does the procedure last?
The procedure takes from 30 to 40 minutes. It is performed on an outpatient basis, without hospitalization, general anesthesia and, in fact, without restrictions. After the procedure, most patients can immediately return to their normal rhythm of life. For precise injection into the problem area, ultrasound control is required.
What will I feel after an injection of platelet-rich plasma?
The sensations can vary from a slight tingling at the injection site in most cases to noticeable pain requiring the use of Panadol (paracetamol) in rare cases.
Is the injection painful?
You will feel a slight tingling sensation, which can be eliminated with local anesthesia. The injection is well tolerated by most patients.
How many procedures will be needed?
Depending on the pathology, the patient's age, the duration of the process and the readiness of your body, 3 to 6 procedures may be needed.
How often is it recommended to repeat the injections?
It is recommended to repeat the injections after one to two weeks.
How long does the course of treatment last?
Depending on the pathology, its duration and the patient's age, the course can last from two weeks to five weeks.
Why is platelet-rich plasma so effective in treating old injuries?
After injuries, the altered focus does not recover completely, due to the fact that not enough time has passed for complete recovery, or due to insufficient blood supply necessary in this case. Restoration of ligaments and tendons requires a long time, so early activity, before complete recovery, can cause incomplete recovery. This in turn can lead to the development of arthritis. Arthritis develops in the joints and spine as a result of instability of the ligaments and supporting structures. It is here that the use of platelet-rich plasma leads to the removal of inflammation and pain and to tissue restoration using the body's own resources and without the use of drugs. Restoration of ligaments and tendons leads to stabilization of these structures, delaying the progression of pathological processes, reducing pain and thereby slowing down the aging process of the joint.
Expected results
Unlike injections of drugs (with the addition of local anesthetic), when an immediate effect is observed, injections of platelet-rich plasma provide a natural healing process that gives results gradually. The first noticeable results appear after a few days (in some cases - after a few weeks). Research and clinical experience show that the use of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a very effective method that allows patients to return to normal life. This occurs due to the elimination of inflammation, pain and increased rate of tissue regeneration. Both ultrasound and MRI confirm the results of treatment.
Am I a candidate for platelet-rich plasma treatment?
Platelet-rich plasma is not a universal treatment for all diseases. Whether plasma will help you in the treatment of your disease will be decided by the attending physician who has experience in treatment with platelet-rich plasma, after a thorough consultation with the necessary studies (such as ultrasound, X-ray, computer thermogram or MRA). A doctor who has no experience in treatment with platelet-rich plasma, as well as a doctor who does not know anything about this method, will always answer negatively, at best, he will say that he does not know.
Is hospitalization necessary?
No, hospitalization is not necessary. The course of treatment is carried out on an outpatient basis, without anesthesia, without pain and without any restrictions. The patient returns to (usual) normal life 30 minutes after the end of the procedure.
What are the objective signs of the effectiveness of treatment with platelet-rich plasma?
Reduction or even complete disappearance of pain, improvement of function and refusal to take painkillers.
When can I expect improvement?
Unlike other treatment methods where the use of local anesthetics leads to improvement in a relatively short period of time. The waiting time varies depending on the pathology, its duration, strength, previous treatment and the characteristics of the patient's body. On average, most patients feel an improvement in the form of reduced pain, swelling and (or) improved function after two weeks and the effect lasts up to 6-8 weeks after the last injection.
Can platelet-rich plasma cure my arthrosis?
When there is no cure for arthrosis, treatment with platelet-rich plasma reduces or eliminates inflammation, reduces or eliminates pain and at the same time stimulates regenerative processes (restoration of damaged tissues), which improve function and slow down the aging process in the joints. In general, this improves the quality of life and saves from disability or slows its onset. We get all of the above using the body's own resources without the use of drugs, which often have side effects.

Is treatment with platelet-rich plasma recommended for meniscus tears?
Yes, it is recommended. Practical work has proven the effectiveness of platelet-rich plasma treatment for meniscus tears with complete restoration of the meniscus in some tears
Can I undergo a course of platelet-rich plasma treatment if I have already had surgery?
If you have already had surgery, but you are still bothered by pain and swelling, and your movements are limited, then a course of PRP therapy will be useful for you, as it will relieve pain and swelling, and also improve movement.
How will I know if the platelet-rich plasma treatment helped me or not?
The answer is very simple. Platelet-rich plasma cannot mask pain or other symptoms. If the treatment helped you, you will definitely notice a difference: the pain will become less or disappear altogether, and it will be easier to move.
When do results of platelet-rich plasma treatment appear?
You will gradually feel improvement starting from 2-3 weeks after the start of the course. We will be able to observe the final result 6-8 weeks after the end of the course. The level of results achieved will depend on the depth of tissue changes, your age, medications taken to treat concomitant diseases, load and body weight (if we are talking about knee, hip or ankle joints).
Does the result of platelet-rich plasma treatment depend on age?
At a younger age, the results are better and achieved faster, but this does not mean that at an older age the results are worse. For example, my patients at 80 and 90 years old with grade 3 and 4 arthrosis, who had already been offered joint replacement surgery, after a course of platelet-rich plasma received excellent results, and most of them do not even want to hear about the operation anymore. The results obtained can last up to three years, and sometimes longer.
What is the success rate of PRP therapy?
Depending on the above data, for different pathologies the success rate of treatment can be from 70-80 to 95-99.
How long does the effect last?
On average, the effect after treatment with platelet-rich plasma lasts up to 3 years, but sometimes it can be longer. Usually, it is after 3 years that patients seek an additional course (and they feel much better than before the first course of treatment).
I underwent a course of PRP therapy, but I was not satisfied with the result. Does this mean that this treatment is not suitable for me?
No. In addition to the characteristics of your body (which are undoubtedly important), the experience of the doctor is of great importance: you need to be able to correctly obtain a plasma fraction with a high concentration of platelets and accurately inject it. For more accurate injection, it is recommended to use ultrasound control. There are still debates about the method of obtaining and preparing platelet-rich plasma, as well as the amount that needs to be administered for a particular pathology.
If PRP therapy is such a good method, then why don't I know about it, and why haven't any of my doctors suggested it to me?
This method has not been used in traumatology and orthopedics for very long - its widespread use in this area has only been observed in the last 10 years. At the same time, PRP therapy has been used in plastic surgery for over 20 years, and in dentistry for over 25 years. As in any other field, not every specialist knows about this method and is ready to use it in their practice.
Due to its relatively recent use, PRP therapy has not yet become a daily practice and a standard curriculum for every specialist.
As treatments for many diseases and conditions continue to evolve and improve daily, we continue to expand our knowledge, but this does not happen for all specialists at the same time.
Above, I have tried to give you useful general information about treatment with platelet-rich plasma. If you have any questions, write to me, I will be happy to answer them.
